Super Bowl LI: 10 Celebrities Celebrating the Patriots’ Win
The New England Patriots solidified their place in the NFL record books with their stunning comeback win in Super Bowl LI. The everyday fans watching from their homes aren’t the only ones celebrating though, as a score of celebrities joined in on the festivities. Some are lifelong Pats fans who just so happened to get famous, while others are friendly with owner Robert Kraft, quarterback Tom Brady, or head coach, Bill Belichick.
Anytime a team garners this many accolades, they’re bound to pick up some well-known fans along the way. That goes double for the Patriots, even while a wide swathe of the country was rooting for the relative underdog, the Falcons. So who exactly was out celebrating once Tom Brady lifted the Lombardi trophy?
- Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg’s Boston roots run deep, having been born and bred in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester with his eight siblings. He was seen on the field before the game, schmoozing with the Patriots and getting a lay of the land at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. It’s said he’s close with Tom Brady too, with the quarterback having appeared alongside Wahlberg on Entourage and Ted 2.
- Gisele Bündchen
This one falls firmly in the “duh” category, but it’s worth including Gisele all the same. The Victoria Secret model married quarterback Tom Brady in 2009, and together they have two children. That of course, makes her the biggest Patriots fan not raised in Boston, and she was seen celebrating with her husband and children as the confetti fell at NRG Stadium.
- Sir Elton John
Elton John may be British, but a close working relationship with Patriots owner, Robert Kraft has put him firmly in the team’s camp over the years. John was named “captain” by Kraft for a 2009 game played in London, was spotted in a luxury suite at Super Bowl LI, and was recognized by Kraft as the “most famous person” listed in his contacts.
- Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck is right up there with Mark Wahlberg in terms of famous lifelong Patriots fans. Affleck was raised in Falmouth, Massachusetts with his brother Casey, and grew up rooting for the Red Sox and Pats. He’s also been an outspoken supporter in the wake of the Deflategate scandal, having taken to Bill Simmons’ show on HBO to defend his beloved hometown team earlier this season.
- Chris Evans
Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg aren’t the only Boston-bred actors actively rooting for their hometown sports teams. Chris Evans grew up 20 miles outside of Boston in Sudbury, Massachusetts and has been a Patriots and Red Sox fan his whole life. As you can see in the above tweet, he was more than a little excited following Tom Brady’s improbable fourth quarter comeback, and likely spent the better part of his night celebrating in the streets.
